Sterling Elliott is 11 years old and began his cello studies at the age of three under the direction of Suzuki Cello teacher Susan Hines. Sterling, the youngest of 3 siblings, did not originally want to play the cello; he wanted to play the violin like his older brother and sister. But his mom convinced him that cellists were smarter than violinists ;) so he made The Elliott Family Quartet perfect by learning to play the cello.
Sterling
was accepted into his first orchestra, the Peninsula Youth Orchestra
Sinfonia when he was just six years old, where he was also the
youngest member for 2 years. He served as principal cellist for the
PYO Sinfonia when he was 7 years old. At the age of 8, he was
accepted into the advanced orchestra, the
Peninsula Youth Orchestra
(PYO), where he has been a member now for 3 years. In 2007, Sterling
was the first place Junior Division winner of the PYO Concerto
Competition, and was featured as a soloist with the orchestra. He
was a consecutive three time first place winner in his age category
at the National Level of the
United States Air Force
Talent Contest.
In November 2009, Sterling was featured as a soloist with the
Hampton University Orchestra. Sterling was the first place senior
division winner for the PYO Concerto competition in 2010 and was
featured as a soloist with the orchestra that year. In his free
time, Sterling enjoys performing and learning new, challenging
music. He also enjoys reading, swimming, playing sports, video
games, and hanging out with his big brother, Brendon. He attends
B.C. Charles Elementary school as a 5th grader and is in the
Talented and Gifted program. Sterling is currently a private student
of Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s principle cellist, Mike Daniels.
